One last word for today, after i reviewed all the comments.....Romania does not have the highest concentration of gipsies, that would be Turkie. Is hard to believe that while the official number(600 000) might be underscored, numbers promoted by all kind of selfproclaimed specialists(2 500 000) is way over the reasonoble doubt of fayrness. You know the drill..."more members of people we represent more funding and atention we get from UN,EU,etc."

You are right, you don't need to apologize for your english spelling...without spell check, none of us can spell anymore! Oricum, e mai usor de scris limba romana decat romaneste.

Craiova was the first Romanian city I ever visited...back in 1994!

I guess there is no need to apollogise for my english speling since I already told you is not my native language.I hope I was able to express corectly what I intended to say without being offensive in any form.I will follow your posts hoping the opinion of an outsider might be helpul.By the way,I now live in Craiova, the place I grew up in.

I agree, the terms are confusing. That's why the general public outside of Romania should not be blamed for their misunderstandings. To them, it looks like a typo, or a spelling mistake, not a cultural difference. That is why I still prefer the word Gypsy; because then it is clear er. Romania does have the highest concentration of Gypsies in all of Europe...and so people naturally associate them with Romania. That problem is not likely to go away anytime soon.

I am not embarassed and I dont think the italians are embarassed by all the mafia stereotype.Gipsies are spread all over the world(USA included)and they are the same everywhere. The insistance on the similarity of Rroma/rromani and Romanian/romani does the trick of general misunderstanding.I am not rrom(gipsy)I am romanian and i have no reason to be enbarassed for what the gipsies do.Those ignorant people who make the confusion should be embarassed.

And that's why I apologized for not making that distinction more clear...the distinction between Ethnic Romanians and Ethnic Gypsies.

Clau2002,

Well, you must know that I have not asked any Americans to give money to this project yet...only Romanian's. I firmly believe that if Romania is deserving of this project, than the project deserves the support of Romanians. The US has enough healthcare problems of it's own. I can't ask Americans to give to Romania with a good conscience when many of us lack access to care. But, I will ask eventually...in the US, when we have a good showing of local support from the local community. Regarding dental care and plastic surgery...they are coming here for many reasons...mostly related to price. It's not that they prefer the system or the care, it's just that they can often save 10,000's of dollars by coming...which justify the cost of travel. The costs would likely be lower in the US if we did not have such a litigious culture, and the doctors did not have to pay such high premiums for insurance to protect themselves. Romania doctors have much lower operating costs and can charge much, much less, especially when it comes to elective treatment.

That s exactly the reason I pointed out that those who know what they are talking about should be more careful when they post on the web.Is their responsability to educate.Tabloid media does enough harm, but at least they have an agenda.

What will happen when, while people are told to contribute money becouse the healthcare sistem in Romania is underdeveloped and unsecure when they stumble on sites where they found that more and more people from Western countries(USA included) go to the same Romania for dental work and plastic surgery? What about those who travel to Romania and find out that the place is not much diferent than New Jersey?Wouldnt they ask, hey! the folks in NJ need help too.

I am often embarrassed by what my fellow Americans do when in other nations. But that does not mean they cease to be from my country. You may be embarrassed by what Gypsies do in other nations, but that does not change the fact that they came from Romania, and in the eyes of most of the world, are Romanian.

Clau2002,

Of course I would not assume a black person with a NY hat is from New York...As an American I understand the difference. But if that man went to China, it might be very reasonable for them to assume he is from New York. So, what I was saying is that if Gypsies from Romania flood a Western European nation, and that is the only contact those W. Europeans have had with "people from Romania" they will naturally assume that this is what Romanian's are like. They are not yet educated enough about the ethnic distinctions and cultural distinctions to tell the difference...and they may never be able to so long as the Gypsies continue to generate so much bad press in W. Europe.

The reason all non Orthodox Christian denominations are labeled as cults simply has to do with the fact that there are still strong political and financial ties between the Orthodox Church and government. In this sense, the word cult does not refer to some aberrant religion, but rather a sect or a group within a group. In Christianity, a cult is a group that falls clearly outside of mainstream, orthodox teaching and doctrine; not a group with foundational beliefs that are the same, but with nuances that differ.
